5 STAR #REVIEW: The Kiss of Deception by @marypearson

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

THE KISS OF DECEPTION. More like the author, Mary E. Pearson, is the master of deception!

Lia doesn’t want to be a princess anymore. She’s tired of being shoved into a mold she doesn’t fit and being forced to marry a prince she has never seen to forge a political alliance is the final straw. So she runs. She leaves her royal life behind for a simple life where she can be who she wants and choose who to marry. Lia’s new life isn’t without trouble as there are dangerous people looking for her and she’s not aware the intriguing men she’s come to know are not who they say they are. One is the prince she left at the altar and the other is an assassin sent to kill her. As she tries to adjust to her new life as best as she can, secrets begin to unravel and the ancient documents she stole from her kingdom may be more important than she realized. Nothing is as simple as she hoped they could be and she’s in grave danger. The kingdoms are on the brink of war, and fleeing her marriage may have tipped the scales.

The best word to describe Lia is rebellious. Her whole life, she has tried to fight the role she was born into and just when it seems as though she lost the fight and is being married into a kingdom her family can not even trust, she displays the biggest act of rebellion yet. Fleeing on her wedding day was the ultimate betrayal to her family and the largest insult to the family she was to marry into. But she doesn’t care. She is a person who deserves to have a life of her own and she refuses to believe that her duty as a princess is a burden she must carry.

I really felt for Lia and admired her strength to take control of her life. You would think that when she flees to make a simple life serving at an inn the story would be boring, but when the handsome and mysterious Rafe and Kaden enter the picture it’s anything but boring. The suspense, deception and intrigue had me reading nonstop and avoiding all responsibility until I had finished. I love being thrown into a new world with traditions, customs and people so different from real life that you get lost. And I was totally lost in this story.

Deception. This word is sooooo important. I can’t explain further, but trust me. I was thrown.

I’m hooked and I need to find out what Lia will do with the secrets she has discovered. The ending wasn’t so much a cliffhanger, but a resolution that there would be so much more and I can’t wait to find out.

4 STAR #REVIEW: Losing Logan by @AuthorSherry

Losing Logan by Sherry D. Ficklin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

LOSING LOGAN is true young adult fiction with a paranormal twist.

Zoe loses her childhood friend, Logan, when he mysteriously dies at a young age but soon realizes she is the only one who can still see him. Trying to help Logan figure out why he hasn’t been able to move on into the afterlife, Zoe starts investigating Logan’s death (accident) and quickly realizes it was no accident at all. Logan suggests that the only way to get to the bottom of how he died is to infiltrate his popular group of friends, so Zoe asks her best friend for help her with a makeover that will allow her to become one of the cool kids. Before long she’s caught up in a murder mystery that is expanding/growing and she may become the next victim if she’s not careful.

Losing Logan was fun, flowed well, and sped by. The plot was action-filled and there wasn’t any excess fluff to bog down the story. Zoe was a spirited, snarky heroine—just right for a young adult novel. I enjoyed the mystery, suspense, and paranormal aspects and thought each was well integrated without being over-the-top.

My only critique would be that I would have liked a little expansion on how Zoe felt after she and Logan drifted apart as adolescents. The way it was stated, I didn’t really feel like she had any lingering emotions or feelings about him when he died so for her to develop such strong feelings for him and to have such a critical part in his after-death experience seemed a bit inconsistent.

Losing Logan is a fast-paced, action-packed, sweet young adult paranormal romance. It would be hard not to enjoy such a fun story.

4 STAR #REVIEW and #GIVEAWAY: The Rules Regarding Gray by @ElizabethFinn77

The Rules Regarding Gray by Elizabeth Finn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

THE RULES REGARDING GRAY is an aptly titled story about a ballet dancer who has let her life pass her by in her dedication to her career and what happens when she throws caution to the wind and steps outside her comfort zone.

Gray has never allowed herself to focus on love, romance, or sex because ballet took up every minute she had. So now she’s at the latter part of her career and she’s finding that her life feels like it’s missing something. She’s bored, under-challenged, underwhelmed. When her boyfriend, Ian, suggests they liven things up with a threesome with his best friend, Jas, Gray is horrified. But then, she’s kind of intrigued, too. She can’t deny her attraction to Jas, but she’s also not sure she’s capable of keeping her emotions out of the equation. Nevertheless, she’s determined to live a little and she decides to give the threesome a try. Ian immediately implements a ton of ground rules for Jas that might have been fine if he didn’t start to slack on his own boyfriend duties almost simultaneously. Before long Gray is seeing all the flaws in Ian and all the attributes in Jas. Jas and Gray are both loyal and trustworthy to those they love, but everyone has their limits.

THE RULES REGARDING GRAY is first and foremost sexy. Jas is sensitive, caring, and attentive and the romance between him and Gray was sizzling and ever-present. Ian on the other hand was a complete jerkwad and I couldn’t believe it took Gray as long as it did to get rid of him. To be completely honest, I was ready to throw him out when he was going over the rules for the threesome. He talked about Gray like she was a prize horse to be bred, with no opinion or say in the matter. It was atrocious. As a whole, he was arrogant, self-centered, and belittling to Gray and his only redeeming quality was his best friend, Jas. I understood Jas’ loyalty to Ian though, especially given their long history and Jas’ trust issues. It takes a lot for Jas to let someone in and so I understood the opposite to be true as well; he wasn’t one to just throw away someone he’d been friends with for so long.

I did have a few minor issues with the story. I felt like some of the mannerisms were over-used: smirking, head bobbling, and humming. It became a bit too redundant, especially the head bobbling since I’m not familiar with that mannerism in the first place. Secondly, and I may get stuff thrown at me for saying this, but I thought there was a little too much sex. It got to the point that it felt like it overpowered the story and I really enjoyed the story for what it was so I didn’t think it needed quite that many sex scenes. I still would have thought it was scorching hot and still would have believed the romance developing between Jas and Gray.

My absolute favorite part of the story, and the scene that had me debating on rating this 5 stars, was Jas and Gray after their fallout. It was so emotional and passionate and their reactions were so powerful and full of personality that it took my breath away.

All in all, I found THE RULES REGARDING GRAY to be entertaining, romantic, sexy and enjoyable. I loved Jas and Gray and hated Ian. I’ve always enjoyed Elizabeth Finn’s work and once again she did not disappoint.
