I find THE DEMON LOVER hard to classify
since it seems to mix several genres. I would likely label it a Fantasy
Mystery Romance with a slight dash of Horror. Why only 4 stars? It
did start out a bit slow and confusing for me as the author was setting the
stage. However, I'm so glad I kept reading because once it got rolling I
couldn't put it down. This book has a bit of everything.
✔ Fantasy – fairy queens, incubus, succubus, witches, magic, familiars, vampires and a whole slew of other fantastical creatures.
✔ Mystery - secret identities, secret societies, and curses - there is more than one mystery to be solved here. I don't want to give anything away so I'll leave it at that.
✔ Romance - Callie's love life is quite interesting. The love scenes are poetically written, fanciful, and have a very sensual air. Sometimes the flashbacks to the "bodice ripper" books written by Dahlia LaMotte are a bit purple prosy but appropriate to the scene and an accurate example of the genre written at that period of time.
✔ Horror - Who or what is preying on the residents of Fairwick? What darkness has Callie unwittingly released on the university and the town?
THE DEMON LOVER is a well-rounded story with rich characters I want to know more about. I love little Ralph! I'll be reading the next in the series. I think fans of fantasy romance would enjoy this book. This isn't necessarily a "happily ever after," it is more unresolved. However, I'm hopeful on where the author is taking Callie. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. (Now I'm going to go buy the next one! I must know what happens! :)
