Blurb:
With one look, I’m his . . .
With one touch, he’s mine . . .
With one kiss, it changes everything between us . . .
I’ve been famous since I can remember. Singing, acting, dancing—I’ve done it all. The tabloids cover my every move, but I don’t want that anymore. I want to be normal, whatever that is.
When I leave Hollywood for college in Vermont, I’m on my own for the first time in my life. This is my chance to figure out who I am and what I want in life.
But it’s a lot harder than I expected. I can’t escape my image. Classes are hard, and I’m struggling. And then there’s Caleb Fox.
Sexy, intriguing Caleb Fox.
Caleb is the one man who doesn’t want to use me. He breaks down my walls. He challenges me. He wants me. And I just don’t know if I can give him the same—or if he’ll stick around when he finds out my shameful secret that the tabloids haven’t managed to uncover.
Dating him is risky enough, but loving him could break me.
My Review:
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
We’ve all read enough tabloids to know that a celebrity’s life is not all roses and sunshine – especially a child star. There are drugs, paparazzi, people you trust selling your stories – it’s safe to say being in the public eye comes with its fair share of problems.
Such is the case with Hailey Bloom – she’s been in the limelight since becoming the Gerber baby at the age of 1 and has stayed in front of the camera as a rock star and as an actress. At times she enjoyed it, other times she was pushed into continuing her career by a mother who only saw dollar signs and forgot that her first responsibility should have been to look out for her daughter’s best interests.
Hailey finally defies everyone by leaving Hollywood for a normal life as a college student at a small college in Vermont. She loses everyone – her mom, even her best friend – when they don’t agree with her choices. So it’s no wonder that as much as she longs for a normal life, she’s wary of anyone’s intentions when it comes to opening up. When she meets Caleb Fox, she immediately feels a connection and a hope sparks that he might be the first person who really wants to get to know her for her.
I really enjoyed the concept, the story, and the pace. I thought it was natural and realistic. I only had two real issues – one was the dialogue, I found it a little immature and unrealistic for how I’d imagine a houseful of college guys to banter back and forth. The second was the convenience of Hailey meeting Caleb and suddenly everyone in his life fills a need in hers: she gains a best friend in his sister Daphne, friends in all of Caleb’s roommates, and his family accepts her as if she is one of their own. It just all felt too easy. I would have preferred she met a girl friend on her own that filled that best friend need and that she eventually welcomed into Caleb’s circle. Meeting Daphne by chance immediately after meeting Caleb just felt a little too convenient and fictional.
The WITH ME series devotes one book to each of Caleb’s housemates and I'm interested to see what Elyssa Patrick does with the other boys. Each of the housemates had their own distinct presence and personality in STAY WITH ME and I’m especially excited for the possibility of a romance between Daphne and one of the guys in particular.
