Insurgent by Veronica Roth
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Insurgent really delves into the chaos that Jeanine has wrought on the factions and how each faction responds. Where Divergent did an amazing job of focusing on the strength and vulnerability of Tris and Four amidst the action - Insurgent is much more about the raging war Jeanine has instigated and how Tris and the others respond.
This was a great sequel but it didn't quite hold me captive the way Divergent did, primarily because it was so much more action based and less about feelings. For example, the interaction between Tris and Four is significantly less in the sequel and while there are some tender moments, they are few and far between.
Despite the above, this series is still a must-read and the ENDING - well let's just say the last few pages pretty much made up for any complaints I had - Veronica Roth really knows how to hook the reader for the next book - but NOT in an irritating cliffhanger style, more of a "I can't believe the author thought of something so perfect as the reason behind the madness and I can't wait to see what happens!" kind of ending.
