#Review: Shooting Scars

Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2)Shooting Scars by Karina Halle
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Do yourself a huge favor and stop right here! If you haven’t read ON EVERY STREET by now, it truly is one you MUST read before you continue on with the trilogy. If you haven’t read it, I can promise you it will enhance your reading experience and you will enjoy the anti-hero, Javier, instead of hating his guts for the duration of SHOOTING SCARS.  This is the second book in the trilogy, so be sure to read SINS & NEEDLES before diving into SHOOTING SCARS.

SHOOTING SCARS is another story told in dueling points of view; switching between Ellie and Camden. Typically, that kind of story telling grates on my nerves, but it didn’t bother me in this second installment of The Artists Trilogy by Karina Halle – I think it was necessary to understanding the story and might have been a bit boring without having the perspective from both characters.

You act strong but everyone can see how vulnerable you are. Men like me, like Travis, we want to protect that. We want to break you, mold you, and keep you as ours.

In SHOOTING SCARS, Ellie is in the middle of all kinds of madness and surrounded by men who want to posses and protect her – it’s a good, albeit frightening place to be. Honestly, there was so much going on in SHOOTING SCARS, I really don’t even know where to begin without giving anything away. It might be best to sum it up and say: Ellie loves Camden. Camden loves Ellie. Ellie loved Javier, but does she still love him? Javier claims to have loved Ellie, but I’m just not sure he knows what love is and I don’t know if he is capable of loving anyone but himself – and even that is questionable. At the end of the day, I think Ellie just wants to settle down and have a normal life, but I’m not sure the characters in this book have the ability to live normal lives.

SHOOTING SCARS gets high marks for drama, but I was a bit disappointed with the level of romance in this installment – but such is life – there is still one more in the trilogy and I am keeping my fingers crossed that Ellie will get some semblance of “happily ever after.” One element that left me scratching my head was Javier’s drug use – that was mentioned in one little scene, but it was kind of glossed over and I kind of felt like: WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THAT??? Why introduce that at all? I suppose it may be revisited in the final book – we shall see!

The bad news is: There is another cliffhanger. The good news is: The final book is out; so don’t get your panties in a wad about it because you don’t have to wait for it – YAY for that! Go and get it, because I know you want to. It’s pretty packed with action and the story is good – I’m out to lunch on a rating. I am vacillating between 3 and 4 stars… at the moment I am leaning towards a 3, but the final book may help make this one a 4. I may do a rare rating change once I have read the final installment.

I'm really hoping things come together in book 3... I thought there were a lot of things left unresolved and I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it wraps up (the way I want it to :-)
