Review: The Playmaker

The Playmaker
The Playmaker by Dakota Madison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What can I say? I’m a sucker for the sweet stuff. Taylor and Kian are almost sickly sweet and I want more of it!

THE PLAYMAKER is Taylor and Kian’s story continued. Kian is now playing in the NHL for Seattle while Taylor is in Arizona finishing up her undergraduate degree and making plans to pursue her PhD. The distance is proving to be too much for them to handle. Kian cannot overcome the need to protect Taylor and Taylor has only really felt safe with Kian near. The looming threat against Taylor makes their situation more unbearable and then the threat becomes reality. Now broken once more, Taylor has to figure out how to pull the pieces back together and decide whether or not to let Kian be there to help.

Taylor cannot seem to catch a break. This girl has been to hell and back - and then hell and back again. Kian seems too perfect and never messes up, which is obviously a little far-fetched, but if anyone deserves her prince charming it’s Taylor. The trauma Taylor endures is gut wrenching and life changing.

“Perhaps this time I was damaged beyond repair. I wasn’t sure Kian knew what he was actually getting when he said he loved me. I know he loved the Taylor I once was. I had no idea what he’d think about the fractured desolate Taylor I had become.”

I felt her pain and although the situation is horrid, Dakota Madison artfully describes the attack to convey the emotional drama. Kian wants to fix her and protect her, but I loved that Taylor works to fix herself. She becomes the ultimate heroine in this sweet yet heartbreaking new adult romance. I wanted to scream a “Hells yeah!” for Taylor. This is a truly a story about survival, becoming a better you out of pain and letting yourself trust love will be there for you no matter what.

THE PLAYMAKER is written in a way that fully immerses the reader in the deeply distressing circumstances Taylor is experiencing while staying true to the new adult genre style I’ve come to expect. I feel is it perfectly written for the target audience. I was truly affected by the story and still got the heat and romance, which in my opinion, is a great literary combo. As with PLAYING WITH FIRE, I had a hard time putting down this sequel. Dakota Madison fully delivers on part two of Kian and Taylor’s story. I seriously suggest you read PLAYING WITH FIRE (FIRE ON ICE #1) first if THE PLAYMAKER sounds like something you’d like to read. I can’t see fully understanding the characters in THE PLAYMAKER without reading the first novel in the series, but you won’t regret it.

Review: Fire on Ice

Fire on Ice
Fire on Ice by Dakota Madison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

FIRE ON ICE is an endearing, sweet and emotional ride through the unlikely love story between a smart and driven rich girl and the rough-around-the-edges athlete.

Taylor Thompson has been burned by an ice-cold hockey player; burned badly. Three years ago her heart was destroyed and the walls she built are so strong she's barely experiencing college life. She has a concrete plan for her education and guys are nowhere near any of her ambitions. Then she meets the hottest guy she's ever seen with whom she has undeniable chemistry. Of course he's a professional hockey player and a player off the ice as well. Kian Kavanaugh's rough childhood has plagued him with insecurities and he knows he's not good enough for Taylor, but that doesn't mean he can stay away from her. She is so different from the "puck bunnies" he is used to sleeping around with and he's determined to be with her.

Kian and Taylor are extremely likeable characters with believable feelings. I am amazed at Dakota Madison's ability to write male dialogue and thoughts so well that I swore I got a glimpse into the guy's psyche and the world of professional athletes. Kian is a hot and deliciously built hockey player and since I don’t know much about hockey I decided to research “hot hockey players.” I highly suggest you do this while reading the book. I love Google!

Taylor's past is heartbreaking as is Kian's and you can't help but hope that these two damaged individuals conquer their demons. I found the drama of competing love interests very true to the story and the new adult genre. For instance, Taylor's friend Kyle has been waiting for her to see him as more than a friend and Kian is none too happy about his meddlesome ways.

"I also knew Taylor was too good for me. It certainly wasn't a secret...But I had something I knew this guy didn't and that was gumption. When I set my mind on something, I didn't give up until I achieved it. I had already set my mind on having Taylor and this little puke wasn't going to stand in my way."

FIRE ON ICE is a cute and sexy new adult story that will stay with long after you finish reading. I loved their strong connection and the way Kian could be so tough and charming at the same time. I found myself cheering for Taylor to take some risks and so happy to have her realize her romantic life wasn't over. FIRE ON ICE ends abruptly so I am relieved I already have the sequel because there is no way I can stop reading about Taylor and Kian! I couldn't put it down and now I have to start THE PLAYMAKER immediately.

Review: The Seventh Victim

The Seventh Victim by Mary Burton

My Rating:  4 of 5 stars

She’s been running seven years and now he may have found her.

Lara Church knows she’s lucky to be alive. She’s the only surviving victim of the Seattle Strangler and she’s been on the move for the last seven years, never staying in one place too long because settling down may mean the past will catch up to her. Finally, she has a home, a job, and a normal life in Austin.

Daybreak never failed to awe and calm. A new sunrise. A new day. A gift. A victory. Most folks missed moments like this. Too busy, still sleeping, or just not interested, many people never paused to watch the sun rise. Not Lara. She watched every one she could.
The Seattle Strangler was never caught. Lara’s memories are locked away in her head and no amount of help seven years ago could unlock them, but the killer is back and remembering her attacker is the only way to stop more women from dying. She wants to remember, she really does, she just can’t and she’s tired of people telling her to keep trying. Sergeant James Beck is the tough Texas Ranger assigned to the case and he’s determined to get Lara to remember. He’s persistent and irritating to Lara, but how long can she resist the chivalrous gentleman with the hot southern drawl?

I love a good thriller/cop drama and THE SEVENTH VICTIM delivers big time in this genre. The story flowed perfectly and although complex, I couldn’t find any holes in the outcomes. The investigation felt very realistic and the twists kept coming. Just when you think you have it, Mary Burton throws another curveball at you as the bodies keep piling up. The main characters were amazingly written. Lara and Beck had that whole “I don’t know if I hate you or want to jump your bones” thing going on and the anticipation, oh the anticipation! It’s a long, slow turn of events for them to realize they have more than a dislike for each other and that made it so much better. I really understood their feelings and that was worth the wait.

I love a strong, kick-ass heroine. Although the title is THE SEVENTH VICTIM, Lara is a survivor, not a victim. I was on the edge of my seat, chewing my fingernails while reading and the ending will not disappoint. I thought I had it, but I soooo did not. If you’re into suspense and thrills then I recommend THE SEVENTH VICTIM. For only $.99 on Amazon right now, you can’t beat it!

Review: Fairy In The Flesh

Fairy In The Flesh by Katalina Leon

My Rating: 2 of 5 stars

FAIRY IN THE FLESH is a time travel fantasy romance novella for grown-ups. 2 out of 5 stars.   The concept of time travel has always intrigued me.  The possibility of traveling back in time opens up endless possibilities.  A classic like the Time Machine my grandfather introduced me to first.  My first time travel romance was Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.  I was hooked.  This author and story introduce us to Maya and Andre.  Maya is modern woman traveling to France in hopes of finding a link to her favorite bad boy bohemian artist, Andre Bosco.  Andre lived and painted passionately in 1903 then disappeared into obscurity.  However, his paintings did live on to intrigue Maya in the present.    With the help of the “Green Fairy”, Absinthe, and a meddling gypsy, Maya travels back in time to Andre’s bed.    This is where my issues with the story start.

WARNING - Some spoilers ahead:

I read both sci-fi and fantasy so I have no problem accepting the idea of time travel.  However, there are inconsistencies that pulled me out of the story.

1. I never understood if her body traveled back or not. I think it did because of what happened towards the end.   Andre talked about finding her outside in the square and having her come back to pose for him.  However, Maya’s first appearance in 1903 is in his room already posing for him and she has period clothes.  Why would she have period clothes and how could he have picked her out in the square as his model if she first arrived in his room?  What happened to the woman he picked up in the square?

2.  She sketches a pencil portrait of him while in the past (which she sees before she gets transported back in time).  So in her own original timeline she had already traveled back and sketched the portrait. Andre wasn’t famous in the original timeline.

3. After she gets pulled back into her modern time.  Everything has changed.  Her entire original timeline has changed, supposedly because of her interaction with Andre in the past. I understand this was supposed to demonstrate just how much she inspired him.   He is a great well known and wealthy artist.  o.O   As evidenced by the charcoal sketch in the original timeline he had already met her in that one too so what changed????

4. I wasn’t convinced of their insta-love either.  It seemed to be merely fascination/infatuation with each other’s looks and admiration of his skill as an artist than any great love that could conquer time itself.  I can deal with insta/fated love with some PNR especially shifters and vampire couples but other than the time traveling thing Andre and Maya are just normal people.  The sex scenes were well written but pretty vanilla.

5. The title was a bit misleading to me too.  There is magic but not really any fairies.  I assume this was a play on what Andre was painting and using Maya as his muse. A few editing issues but not bad.

6. Why would the mysterious Miss Ruby help them?  I didn’t see the connection.

FAIRY IN THE FLESH just wasn’t my cup of tea.  I think I would like a bit more thought put into plot points to keep the inconsistencies to a minimum.  If they aren’t actually inconsistencies then more explanation is needed to clear up those points.  If that type of thing doesn’t bother you, you might enjoy this.  I am not likely to read another though, since this is a pet peeve of mine.

Review: Sparks

Sparks
Sparks by Cathryn Louis

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I was so excited when I read the summary for SPARKS. I really thought I was in for a wild story full of deception and corruption and hot sex, but I was sorely disappointed.

Gabrielle Winston has created a financial analysis application that could corner the market and change the way businesses are run called Sparks. She shouldn’t have used her software for work-related business, but she did and now she can’t hide the impending financial doom that everyone will encounter from her bosses and the rest of the public. While uncovering this upcoming crisis, she also unravels the plots of enemies and creates a few enemies of her own. Now she must keep quiet and keep safe and hope the inner turmoil doesn’t ruin her. Jarin San Chapelle is a successful businessman and artist from a wealthy family with ties to Gabrielle’s company. He wants her application and he wants her too. He can have both if he can keep them safe.

First, let me tell you Cathryn Louis is obviously one smart cookie. She is a self-proclaimed techie with the resume to back it up and you can see that there is no shortage of information in her writing. I’m not dumb, but most of the plot revolves around industry terms that those in the business know and it’s another language for those who don’t do this for a living, like me. So I ended up skimming a lot of material with detailed instructions on how Gabrielle does her analyst job. (Pages upon pages of information on corporate networks and financial analysis apps. Blah.) Luckily, I understand enough about the market crash to follow that part of the plot, but its not something I desire to read about in a novel in such extreme detail. Let me repeat, DETAIL. I would’ve stopped reading if not for the fact I was reading for review. The plot of corporate espionage and hostile takeovers during an impeding market crash could have been interesting, but its not well executed. I was bored and lost for the majority of book.

That being said, I was also expecting romance. Where is the sexy time?? Gabrielle and Jarin don’t even meet until the second half of the story and then all of sudden - BAM! - they’re in love. Uh, what did I miss? It was so out of the blue it seemed that it may have been thrown in afterwards. Gabrielle hates Jarin for being a jackass then the next day he grabs her to say sorry and that’s their love story. I’m not exaggerating. That’s it. Stolen glances and possessive feelings are mixed into the remainder of the story to convey their relationship. Unbelievable and boring.

Unless you’re an IT techie genius or an investment banker I would not read SPARKS. Even people with those specific backgrounds may not find this interesting, because who wants to read about work when you’re not at work? I read for entertainment and to escape real life and this book failed me on both counts.

Review: Hers

Hers
Hers by Dawn Robertson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

 photo vxp25c_zps206881e4.gif

That’s right! My name is mother-fucking Seven James, bitches! No one ever gave me anything and I’ve never asked for what I want; I take it! I demand respect and I don’t apologize for being a slut. My family sucks. I only have one true friend in the world and that is questionable at times. I never fuck the same man twice and if you can’t get down with a threesome with my BFF, then keep on steppin’!

And THAT is Seven James, well, that WAS Seven James until one of her little playthings turned into something else entirely. His name’s Levi Parker and he’s a whole lot more than just a “little plaything” to be cast aside because of some stupid rules.
Levi Parker. Holy. Fucking. Shit. My heart skips a beat, and I see my career falling apart before my eyes. The guy I fucked two nights ago, up the goddamn ass with a strap-on, is one of my new fucking board members. I. Am. So. Fucked. So fucked. So beyond fucked.

My nerves are on fire, and I do everything I can not to flip the fuck out in front of these men who should be fearing me.

Levi is willing to indulge her need to dominate as long as it’s him she’s dominating. He is a master at ninja mindfuckery when it comes to Seven and although it takes her a minute to realize it, she’s on to him and very aware of her predicament. Even though his existence in her life goes against every rule and boundary she has ever set for herself, she can’t refrain.
Should I play into this little game we have going on here? A very fucking dangerous game for both of us.

I just can't help it, because whether or not I want to admit it, I think I just met my fucking match.

Seven James has always been in full control, so why would she think things would be any different now? Clue #1: The no strings attached, one-night stand ended up being a company board member. Clue #2: The uncontrollable desire to indulge in more of that “little plaything’s” brand of loving.
My name is Seven James, and I am the unwanted child of two hippy nomads. The little sister of an asshole brother who reminded me every day of my life that nobody has ever, or will ever, want me. . . . No one has ever wanted me. I have never wanted anyone. I use sex to cope with the emptiness in my life. I’m a whore. . . . I am broken. I am emotionally void. . . . That is me. That is who Seven James is. Is that who you want?

YES!! SEVEN JAMES! YOU ARE A WANTED WOMAN!

Author Dawn Robertson did an excellent job of serving up the tough as nails heroine who just needed the right man to break her. The follow-up book, FINDING WILLOW is due out sometime next year. The great news is that there is no cliffhanger to worry about in HERS, so go forth dear readers and indulge yourself in some naughty fun.

My Review:  4 of 5 stars

They come from different worlds. They fell in love. They were ripped apart.

Alana is from a prominent family and is on track to follow in her father and uncle’s footsteps as an attorney. Five years ago, her world was rocked when she gave up her V-card to Ryan Pierce and then he vanished without so much as a note. She may have moved on, but she hasn’t forgotten the man that captured her heart.

Ryan left Alana, but he had his reasons for his disappearing act – a reason I wouldn’t have guessed in a million years. Over the past several years he has been getting his life in order and raking in the dough as one of the hottest male dancers known as Jack the Stripper. So imagine his delight and her horror as their paths cross again while he is dry humping her cousin… half naked, on stage!
I may have had more lovers than you, and I may take my clothes off for countless women, but you are the only one who can strip me bare.

See? Could these two look any more different? Looks are deceiving, because they are truly a match made in heaven!

STRIP ME BARE is one of those books that I really liked the idea of and I was so excited that it actually lived up to my expectations. The characters were really fantastic. I kind of thought Alana was going to be a little hoity-toity at first, judging by her reaction to the “raunchy” strippers at the male review club, but she actually surprised me and I loved her spirit. Ryan was such a sweetie, but at times he was almost a doormat for his mom and brother and I never really understood that dynamic. The supporting characters were such fun, but my favorite was Uncle John *sigh* what a keeper! Too bad he was married, because I was kind of hoping for story all about him ☺

I’ll have to give props to Alana for being confident enough in herself, Ryan and their relationship to be “okay” with him being a stripper. I mean, let’s face it; he’s hot and running around half naked all over the place while horny women go crazy and paw all over him – no doubt offering just a smidge more money for a happy ending… He’s a smart man and knows he has his “happy ending” waiting for him at home.

STRIP ME BARE was a great contemporary romance that has some bumps and unexpected turns that keeps the story exciting. Author Marissa Carmel has a couple of other book out and a few more on the way to shelves and I plan to check out what other tricks she has in her bag!

Blog Tour Review and Giveaway: Panic by J.A. Huss

Blurb:
Rook is chasing her dream—film school and a chance at a life beyond the one she ran from six months ago. But before she can become the girl she wants to be, she must deal with the girl she left behind.

Ronin is also chasing his dream—a family of his own and a life away from erotic modeling. And he too, has a past he’s trying to forget. A past that makes Rook question everything about their life together.

Lies, secrets, and shocking truths will rock the foundation Rook and Ronin have built. Can they put the past behind them and move forward together? Or is this just another too good to be true relationship that will crash and burn in the end?

Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I knew going into PANIC that there were certain things I could expect.  I would love the heck out of Ronin and Rook.  I might love a little too much out of Ford.  And Rook might get spooked and shock us all.  What I didn’t expect?  Ninety percent of what actually happened in PANIC.  It was so much better than anything I expected (and mind you I rated the last two books 5 stars so I feel like I expected a lot).  I am simultaneously jealous of everyone who gets to experience it for the first time and fangirl dancing because I got to read it early!

Rook moves up to Fort Collins to begin her stint as Shrike’s errand girl.  She’s devastated to be leaving Ronin behind as he’s busy managing the new Gidget contract but at least she has her friends Spencer and Ford to keep her company.  Only Ford, well, he never just keeps his mouth shut and he’s always surprising her, so he throws her for a couple loops that have her head spinning.  She’s also struggling through some of her required classes at the local community college which makes her wonder if she’s even equipped for this whole college degree goal. Add to that the fact that Claire is a big part of the Gidget contract and always a source of jealousy for Rook and you pretty much understand some of the stress going on in Rook’s head.

The best part?  All of that is just groundwork for the crazy rug that J.A. Huss has been getting us all on—just so she could pull it out from under us!  Because everything we knew about Rook, well, that wasn’t even half of it.  And all the things we wondered about the cons Ronin, Ford, and Spencer used to run?  Get ready because we get a whole lot more information on how those worked and who did what.

J.A. Huss literally gave me everything I’d begged for, hoped for, and then she gave me so much more.  PANIC was suspenseful and exciting.  It had passionate moments between Rook and Ronin that had me highlighting huge paragraphs.

I want you to fight for us, Rook.  You never want to fight for us, you just want to walk away whenever it gets hard.  And dammit, this is not hard, Rook.  This life we’re living right now is fucking paradise.  So how will you act when the shit gets out of control?  Will you just leave me when I need you most?  Because I’d never leave you.  I hope you know that, Rook.  I’d never walk out.  I’d fight for you every single time.  You’d never even have to wonder if I’d be there because I’d show the fuck up before that thought could ever cross your mind.

It had Rook growing, Ronin despairing, and Ford revealing more and less than ever.  To be honest, I think I highlighted half the book.  And the best part of all?  The thing that has me so grateful because honestly I couldn’t fathom leaving Rook, Ronin, or any of the team alone after just three books?  Ford is getting his own book in January of 2014.  Squeeeee!  And then, later, Spencer.  *Insert high pitched squeals here*
