SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE introduces the world to the MacKenna brothers and their down-to-earth, gentlemanly ways. It’s about giving the one who broke your heart a second chance, even if you can’t bear the pain if they break it again.
Brooke fled Montana after her childhood love and fiancé, Logan, destroyed her heart. She’s spent the last 8 years in California focusing on building a successful career as a doctor and maintaining a busy schedule with swimming and running in her free time. What she hasn’t done is spent a lot of time back home, avoiding any chance of running into the man who shattered her heart. When her mom calls with alarming news, Brooke returns home for three months to support her family at a sensitive time. While she may be from a small town, she hopes it’s not so small that she can’t avoid Logan. Unfortunately, fate has something else in mind and run-ins with Logan are thrust at her from all directions. It’s not long before Brooke has to decide if she can ignore the sexual chemistry they so clearly share or if she’ll share her body but not her heart.
I love romances. I love reading about people as they fall in love. But I prefer if they don’t admit how desperately they want love. Every character in SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE seemed to mention at one point or another how they had everything they wanted in life except that one thing. I find that especially off-putting in guys. Maybe I’m just a skeptic, but I’ve always thought love finds you when you’re not looking rather than when you’re begging for it. Another thing, I thought there was a little too much focus on working out and what Brooke ate - it got to the point where I felt like I was being reminded to work out if I wanted to have Brooke's body. I also found the limited omniscient point of view distracting especially since instead of just learning about Brooke and Logan’s love for each other, we were involved in the love interests of all the other characters. I would prefer a few hints at what might be in store in future books but the majority of the story to remain focused on the main love interest. That being said, I actually thought Tara Paradise applied a really smooth transition from one voice to the other in a point of view I’m usually not a fan of.
Brooke and Logan brought tears to my eyes during their climactic reveal and I thought SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE offered a fresh approach to the cheating story. Even when I was guessing at certain things that had happened to Brooke after she and Logan broke up, the author was able to keep other parts a mystery, which I really enjoyed. I could understand the reasons why they’d stay apart even as I rooted for them to find a way to be together. Logan was truly a good guy and there was never a second I doubted his intentions, even when he was screwing up royally. SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE offers a love story with two genuine main characters who are good on their own but even better together.
