Review: Gone Girl

Gone Girl
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

GONE GIRL was slow to get going - it really started to pick up about half way through the book. I had lots of theories about what was going on and one actually turned out to be correct. I enjoyed it, but got a little bored with the story and just wanted to get to the end so I could find out what really happened.

This psychological thriller had a lot of twists and turns and definitely proved the old adage "there are two sides to every story and then there's the truth," to be correct.

GONE GIRL chronicles the life of a couple who have been married for 5 years - life is not peachy in their world. The story is told in real time from the husband's perspective and through a diary of the missing wife. I felt like I was reading a story ripped from the headlines - husband and wife have issues and the wife goes missing then the husband is a prime suspect in her possible murder. I will have to say that I was not pleased with how it ended - not at all.

For those of you who follow my reviews, this is not a typical read for me - dark, yes - erotic, no. If you are looking for a mystery with a good story, then you should check this one out.

I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing really did. Sadly, I thought it was a little anti-climatic.

Review: Consequences

Consequences
Consequences by Aleatha Romig

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

STOP THE MADNESS!!! Seriously, I can’t take it! I absolutely CANNOT take the not knowing what is going to happen next… I have really got to stop reading books that make me crazy – yeah right, I suppose that is half the fun, right?

First of all, I feel the need to disclose that this is not a fun and fluffy book – entertaining, mysterious, scary and frustrating – yes, yes, yes and yes! NOT a story of goodness and light. Of-course, parts of the book are fun and sexy, but there is always a sinister undertone lurking in the background.

Brutalized and kidnapped by a handsome and wealthy psycho, Claire struggles with a wide range of emotions over a period of 2 years while being held captive - trapped in beautifully exquisite surroundings but a horrifically terrifying life.

As the book’s blurb says, it really does “unfold like a movie.” In fact, SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY came to mind a lot. Reading CONSEQUENCES was like being on an emotional rollercoaster and I am still reeling. I was constantly conflicted. The emotional and physical abuse Claire endured was painful to read – I was screaming at her to get a freaking grip and get the hell out! Then, at other times, I was really rooting for Anthony and Claire to make it as a couple. As I was reading, I tried to distance myself from the contents on the pages, but ultimately, the bold imagery forced me to internalize the emotion of the abused heroine – this must be similar to the feelings abused women go through. The emotions of despair and anxiety at having to constantly walk on eggshells in fear of upsetting the sensitive balance between loving elation and angry outbursts. It was exhausting.

I love it when the author throws the reader a curve ball and that is exactly what Aleatha Romig does in CONSEQUENCES. I was certain I knew what was going to happen then she totally yanked the rug right out from under me, knocking me on my ass and leaving me totally stunned. I am on the edge of insanity waiting for Book #2, Aleatha!

Looking for a psychological thriller? Then you have found it! It’s a good one! CONSEQUENCES is definitely a book you have to read. I hope it evokes the same crazy emotions in you that it did in me and I hope you love it as much as I did!

Review: If I Were You

If I Were You
If I Were You by Lisa Renee Jones

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS 20-FREAKING-13??? THAT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!

If you are my friend it is a prerequisite that you tell me when there is a cliffhanger – I mean a real cliffhanger with no closure and I have to wait 5 flipping months to find out what the heck happens next! GAH!

Okay, now that I have my tantrum out of the way I can honestly say IF I WERE YOU was amazing – yes, AMAZING! For all of you who may be avoiding this book because of the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY reference in the book's description, just get that out of your head right now because there really are very few similarities. Well, yes, there is a heroine who is innocent to the world of BDSM and is intrigued by the thought of it. Yes, there is a hot hero who is wealthy and has a big secret, but that’s where I think it ends. Lovers of “FIFTY” will love it and the critics of “FIFTY” who love romantic suspense with BDSM undertones will love it.

Meet the mysterious cast of characters:

Rebecca Mason is the missing gallery salesperson and author of the erotic journal that initially intrigues Sara about the world of BDSM.

Sara McMillan is high school teacher by trade who is also somewhat of an art expert finds herself in “Wonderland” also known as the Allure Art Gallery in a quest to uncover answers to the perplexing disappearance of the journal’s owner, Rebecca. In a fantastic twist of fate, Sara acquires a job at the prestigious gallery, affording her the opportunity to get to know more about Rebecca and her life. As the story unfolds, Sara becomes cognizant of the fact that nothing is as it appears. It seems that everyone she encounters who knew Rebecca adds another level of complexity to her new life and further complicates what was started as a simple inquisition has now turned into something else all together.

Mark Compton, sexy gallery owner and über dominant…don’t worry, I’m not giving anything away, because this fact is glaringly obvious from the get-go. There is not much else I can tell you except for he is as enigmatic, if not more so than any of the characters.

Chris Merit. Oh boy, Chris Merit…I love him. I loathe him. No, I really love him, but I hate his mood swings, but that is what makes him interesting and real. The accomplished artist is confidently controlled when it comes to just about everything…everything except for Sara. He sets his sights on her right away and his dark and brooding persona draws her into his web.

I am not happy at all about the serious cliffhanger, but I am only mad because I am dying to know what happens next. If you love a good mystery that is sexy and exciting, then you have to read this first book in the INSIDE OUT trilogy, IF I WERE YOU – don’t be mad at me when you love it because I warned you the next book isn’t out until February 2013. Lisa Renee Jones, I beg you to write faster!

Review: Eighty Days Yellow

Eighty Days Yellow
Eighty Days Yellow by Vina Jackson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

EIGHTY DAYS YELLOW is an erotically dark and at times frustrating tale of Domination and submission.

A native of New Zealand, Summer is now living in London and aspiring to play the beautiful music she creates with her treasured violin. Lately, she has to make do with waiting tables and busking on the streets to make ends meet. In addition to the less than stellar career, her love life is also suffering as she is in a repressive relationship with vanilla man – though she cannot put her finger on what is missing, she knows their sex life is void of the dark passion she longs for.

On one fateful night, Summer finds herself in the wrong place at the right time when a fight breaks out and her treasured violin is damaged beyond repair. In the depths of despair, Summer contemplates her options; none of which are appealing and in the end comes up with nothing.

Dominik, the handsome university professor, is enamored by the music created by the crimson-haired beauty he encounters on the street. When he learns of her troubles, he hatches a plan to solve both their problems – her need to create music and his need to fulfill his darker desires. In an effort to lure her in without scaring her away, he starts out with a simple solution to her problem: he will replace her violin if she will play for him in a private concert. Well, of course, you know neither can stop there…

The undeniable spark between the two quickly turns into a full out blaze as they explore the tastes of the dark side of loving. As with all great stories, there are many obstacles the lovers are forced to overcome – namely the seemingly never-ending string of conniving “friends” in their lives. Who do you trust when your trusted friends are working against you?

Can they overcome their fears enough to fall in love or will they forever stuck in between their desires and what society deems as a normal loving relationship?

On several occasions, I thought I knew where the story was going, only to be surprised with the path author, Vina Jackson chose. I loved the uncertainty I felt as a reader regarding the motivations and final destinations of the characters. At times, I felt rage on Summer’s behalf and anger with her for putting herself through the torment she endured.

Though I was satisfied with the ending, I feel like there is more to the story and hope the author gives us eighty more days of yellow. Darkness, domination, submission and a medium amount of humiliation – if you enjoy this type of kink, then you will enjoy the passion and drama captured within the pages of EIGHTY DAYS OF YELLOW.

Review: Love and Lattes

Love and Lattes
Love and Lattes by Heather Thurmeier

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

LOVE AND LATTES was a story I really loved, from the club thumping beginning to the very romantic ending!

After a fun filled night of dancing and passion, Julia is completely oblivious to the identity of the sexy stranger she spent this incredible night with...that is until she literally runs into him at her new job. What happens when her "party world" collides with her professional world? How could this man ever believe that this truly is the only one-night-stand she has ever had?

Chase longs to find a woman who is in love with him and not his money or family name. Is it possible that Julia could be this woman, maybe the only woman in a city of thousands who actually like him for who he is and status in society? Although Chase's body longs to experience the intense pleasure he share while in Julia's bed, his mind knows that anonymity is almost impossible - she is likely just playing him as so many other women have attempted in the past.

As their personal and professional lives intertwine it becomes painfully obvious how the story of LOVE AND LATTES must play out.

LOVE AND LATTES is a great reminder that what happens in private doesn't always stay private and that love ultimately conquers all - at least it does in all great romances. Julia and Chase are warm and lovable characters. Their story had me sucked in from the beginning and I was rooting for them all the way - I hope you will too!

An Introduction to Sappho by Xavier Edwards

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sweet, quickie story about best friends exploring each other sexually. One girl is a lesbian and experienced in the ways of pleasing a woman and the other is straight, but obviously curios about experiencing the pleasures of being with another woman. I am not typically into reads that only contain f/f interaction, but this one was great!

Review: Cynful

Cynful
Cynful by Dana Marie Bell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

CYNFUL was written with the sexy humor that I have come to expect from Dana Marie Bell, but I was a little let down with this book overall.

I don't like to write spoilers in my reviews, so let's just say that I didn't feel that Julian behaved like I thought his character should have behaved. I know she wanted to portray him as sort of a gentle giant, but a bear with the desire to claim his mate should have been more agressive... I didn't buy it!

Review: The Art of Submission

The Art of Submission
The Art of Submission by Ella Dominguez

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

THE ART OF SUBMISSION is a full-length, erotic novel chronicling the sexual exploration of two dynamic characters with tortured pasts struggling to come to terms with their dominant and submissive natures.

Isabel is a young, starving artist who is intensely private and extremely reluctant to share her art with the world. Though she is somewhat innocent in reality, her imagination and vivid dreams transport her to the unfamiliar world of BDSM giving her the inspiration to create beautifully erotic masterpieces. Using art as her wordless diary, she chronicles her every fantasy on canvas. Isabel’s life is forever changed when her private collection falls into the hands of a handsome gallery guest.

Dylan, a wealthy securities specialist, is no stranger to betrayal - leaving him a mistrustful mess. He is a smart businessman, but hasn’t always made the best decisions in his private life, which has led him to where he is today – bored and sexually frustrated. As a connoisseur of fine art and fine women with very specific sexual inclinations, he feels like a kid in an erotic candy store when he stumbles upon the sensual creations of an unknown artist in a local gallery. The images on the canvas speak to him, awakening the dormant desires from within leaving him longing to fulfill the urge to once again dominate a submissive beauty in the bedroom. Driven by his need, Dylan purchases the entire collection inadvertently opening the door to the life he left behind in the BDSM lifestyle, a life he vowed to never to revisit.

A series of events thrust the pair together in a sensual journey into the fascinating world of Domination and submission. THE ART OF SUBMISSION is not your average tale. If you are looking for a predictable story with a demure submissive prepared to bow down and serve a Master, then this will not be the story for you. If you think you might enjoy a little tug-of-war in the struggle for power and dominance as well as a feisty heroine who gives the hero a run for his money, then you definitely need to pick up THE ART OF SUBMISSION.

NOTE: Self-Published indicates no “professional editing” has occurred. With the exception of some grammatical and spelling errors, Ella Dominguez has done a wonderful job of giving the reader a lovely finished product. I know some of you take off stars for editing errors, so I thought this was worth mentioning - if the story is appealing to you, please don’t let this deter you from snatching it up. I can almost guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Nerds Are Freaks Too
Nerds Are Freaks Too by Koko Brown

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this one. I love geeks to freaks kind of books. Best friends finally break down and admit to each other and themselves that they are in love :-) The best part is underneath the khaki's and button down former geek lurks a dominant and sexually adept man - and he only has eyes for one woman!
