Blog Tour #Review and #Giveaway: Guns 4 Stars by @JAHuss

GUNS by JA HUSS

Description:

THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE BOOK - IT IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU READ ALL THE PREVIOUS NOVELS AND NOVELLAS BEFORE STARTING THIS BOOK.

Spencer Shrike is a man with a plan. Get in. Get out. Move on. He loves Ron the Bomb, and her safety is the only thing on his mind these days. But life is a tricky bastard, and conning criminals for the better part of ten years brings its own set of problems. Sure, Rook lied her way out of a sticky situation, covering for crimes Ronin, Ford, and Spencer committed, and getting them all off scot-free in the process.

But not everyone is buying Rook’s story, and Spencer is desperate to figure out who’s in town setting them up for a fall.

Veronica the Bombshell Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—completely distant and moody. She’s done sitting at home, pining over a man she can’t have.

But she’s not opposed to fighting for him.

Ron the Bomb fights hard and she fights dirty, so she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Spencer’s attention.

But now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. He’s got secrets too, but unlike Spencer, Bobby Mansi is more than willing to let Veronica in on them.

The entire Rook and Ronin series comes full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only way to set it right…  is to get out the guns.

Review:
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Poor Veronica. She really can’t catch a break. Even when it’s her book, she has to share it with the Team. She’s waited patiently through four books and two novellas for her turn and even now, GUNS isn’t really about her… It’s about the Team and she’s not part of the Team, is she?

Ronnie has loved Spencer since the day she met him. And for a while, things were good. In fact, they were amazing. But then, Spencer pushed her away and he hasn’t opened up to her since. She doesn’t get to know team secrets, she’s not privy to team meetings. She’s just…there. Waiting for the guy who may never return.

I actually thought it was kind of genius the way J.A. Huss made Ronnie share her book with Rook and Ashleigh. Rook, who’s already had three books all her own, just continues to demand the attention. And honestly, while Ronnie didn’t seem to hold that against Rook, I kind of did. Because she didn’t seem to have the common sense to hide it better. She’d accidently mention something the Team did or something they were going to do and it felt kind of like she was rubbing it in. Like she was accustomed to the world revolving around her and wasn’t above shoving it in Ronnie’s face (although knowing Rook that wasn’t her intention at all).

The truth is, Spencer learned early on that to love someone was to invite them into his danger. While he can’t help that his best friends are mixed up in this mess, he can keep Ronnie out. So that’s why he broke it off all those years ago and hasn’t gotten back with her since. And now, the Team is in more trouble than ever; which means he’s all the more determined to keep his distance.

J.A. Huss certainly did not disappoint in this last Team job; it was exciting and intricately layered. There are so many details involved in the Team’s jobs and I love watching everything play out. At times, I wished GUNS was more focused on Spencer and Ronnie as a couple, but I understood why it needed to be the way it was. Especially since GUNS was so much more than Ronnie and Spencer’s story—it was the culmination of all the Team’s efforts and the final actions of Ronin, Ford, and Spencer as a team.

J.A. Huss hinted at two possibilities for side stories at the end of GUNS and I’m really hoping she pursues one or both of those. I give 4 stars to GUNS and a loud round of applause to J.A. Huss for writing a series that is adventurous, suspenseful, and romantic all at once.
