Review: Bound By Blood

Bound by Blood (Cauld Ane, #1)Bound by Blood by Tracey Jane Jackson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you like alpha males, then you will devour this new series about a whole clan of Scottish Vikings who love fiercely and are forever barking orders at the women they love (whether they're listened to or not).

Dr. Samantha Moore is recruited to work for the largest pharmaceutical company in Scotland to study the blood of the Cauld Anes. Samantha is shy and very skeptical when it comes to people, so she is shocked when she immediately feels drawn toward her new boss, Dr. Kade Gunnach. She finds herself opening up to him and trusting him implicitly, despite a lifetime of keeping most people at arms' length. The attraction is mutual and so begins a love affair that will leave you wishing you had your own alpha male to dote on you, worship you, and boss you around incessantly.

I loved the strong attraction Samantha and Kade felt for each other and Kade's immediate need to protect Samantha above all else. I loved the way they communicated and could read each other. I don't know that I'd like it in real life, but in my love stories there is nothing I like better than the overbearing, possessive kind of man in which Kade was a master. We also meet Kade's equally domineering brothers who I believe will be the starring love interests of the next few books in the series. I'm especially looking forward to Brodie, a man of few words and rather abrasive tactics that I think will be torturously delicious when it's his turn to be the leading male.

Tracey Jane Jackson really set up a phenomenal new series with BOUND BY BLOOD and I will be impatiently waiting for the next alpha male, I mean book, in the series!

Review: If You Find Me

If You Find Me
If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

IF YOU FIND ME is a gut-wrenching tale of abuse and abandonment. It will make you want to hug every child you see and protect them from the evils of the world.

As a child, children should have the luxury to behave as such and they are supposed to loved and protected from all harm. Fifteen-year old Carey has not had this luxury in her short life. As the daughter of a meth addicted, mentally ill mother, Carey has had to take on the role that should have been her mother’s responsibility – the role of provider, teacher and disciplinarian to her younger sister has sadly fallen into her capable teenaged hands.

When Carey was very young, her mother whisked her away to a camper in the dense and secluded national forest that she now calls home. When her mother gives birth to a little baby, her mother is unable to care for the child and irresponsibly leaves them to fend for themselves for days, weeks and months at a time. Carey is forced to grow up much faster than any child should ever have to. Until one wonderful day, when their whereabouts is finally discovered by a man she comes to know as her father and is taken to a world filled with modern conveniences that most “normal” people take for granted every day. Although this world is scary and foreign to Carey and her baby sister, Nessa, they quickly learn what it means to truly be loved and cherished and most of all protected.

Carey is such a strong character. I love her! I love how she grabs the bull by the horns and hangs on for dear life – because she knows that is the only way to survive the vicious bucking ride-of-a-life she as been thrown into. Witnessing the transformation of Carey and Nessa was uplifting and emotional. Although their story is a very sad tale, it really forces you to stop and think about how a simpler life is not always such a bad thing – though few would actually want to live it.

IF YOU FIND ME is a wonderful story for all ages – a word of caution, there are recollections of rape, abuse and drug use, but the story overall is one to be enjoyed by all. Pull up a chair, grab a tissue and hug your children because this is an emotional novel you will not want to put down until you have read the very last page.

Review: The Stepfather's Revenge

The Stepfather's Revenge
The Stepfather's Revenge by Sinder Stone

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I quite enjoyed the first book in this quickie series, but THE STEPFATHER'S REVENGE seemed to missing a little something for me to really love it. If there is a third book, I will read it just to see what happens next, but I will pray it is on Amazon Prime so I don't have to pay for it!

Review: The Edge of Never

The Edge of Never
The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Geez! Somebody please warn me when I am about to read a tearjerker! THE EDGE OF NEVER was a beautifully emotional story and I fear for the next book I pick up to read :-)

When twenty-somethings Cam and Andrew are thrown together in a wonderful twist of fate, who knew things would become so deep - for lack of a better word - between them. I am certain neither had a clue where their relationship would lead them because if they had that kind of foresight, they never would have let it happen. Both have secrets holding them back from loving again, but fate is persistent and has other plans.

If you want to cry a little and feel uplifted at the same time, then this is a must read romance!

Review: Once A Duchess

Once a DuchessOnce a Duchess by Elizabeth Boyce
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fans of Pride and Prejudice will devour this historical romance that does an amazing job of combining realistic actions/reactions for that era with a modern description of the intimate moments between the characters.

Isabelle Lockwood is a spirited, opinionated and talented woman who grew up without the guidance of a mother to explain what boundaries had to be maintained in a male/female friendship to maintain proper decorum. Though perfectly innocent, her relationship with a childhood friend leads to the failure of her marriage, thanks to a meddling mother-in-law who never approved of the match. Unwilling to be kept down by a society that scorns her and a brother who disowns her, Isabelle takes a job at an inn as a cook. A chance encounter with her former husband brings back all the feelings they once shared, despite a wall of hurt and betrayal on both sides.

Elizabeth Boyce does an amazing job of portraying all the nuances of the era while also providing a story that feels fresh and current. Isabelle is the kind of heroine you can be proud of; she has a way of taking all the negative people throw at her and wielding her own way through it – but she doesn't brag about it or throw it in your face. She also doesn't just fall into Marshall's arms the second he arrives – she may love him but she also holds him accountable for everything he says and does.

ONCE A DUCHESS may be a historical romance but it also spends a decent amount of time on the storyline and action. No matter what aspect of the book draws you in to start the book, the story and characters as a whole will keep you fully invested until the final page.

Review: Not Her Type

Not Her Type
Not Her Type by Kay Jaybee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

NOT HER TYPE...I just can't understand why not! Who doesn't love a tattooed bad boy? NOT HER TYPE is wicked naughtiness at it's best and is just what the doctor ordered to draw out all the dirty fantasies you have all pent up inside.

Jenny is a loner in her early thirties. She has not been with a man for many years and she thinks she is fine with that until the sexy courier who brings her films every Tuesday starts to worm his way into her fantasies. Unable to fight the mutual attraction, they embark on a sexual adventure, pushing all the boundaries of dirty, kinky sex they can think to explore. John lures Jenny out of her self-imposed celibacy with promises of sinful delight and he doesn't disappoint. Sinful delight is exactly what film courier; John brings to this spicy quickie.

Though I still haven't quite figured out why Jenny has a courier bring films to her every week, it is a minor detail that I am willing to overlook for the sake of good smut! NOT HER TYPE proves that sometimes you should just throw caution to the wind and take the plunge into the unknown, who knows, it could be rewarding!

NOT HER TYPE explores a wide variety of kinks including light bondage, domination, watersports as well as sex with strangers, exhibitionism, voyeurism and a little girl on girl action. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then check it out and you shall not be disappointed.

Review: Heated Match

Heated Match (Coded for Love, #1)Heated Match by Lynne Silver
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

HEATED MATCH was nothing like what I thought I'd be reading when I decided to get this book, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed! From the picture and summary, I thought I was choosing an erotica romance with a Sci-Fi subplot. Instead I found a romantic suspense novel with a really intriguing Sci-Fi story that had me cursing the bad guy and cheering for Adam and Loren to save each other in every sense of the word.

Adam is a highly trained team leader of a covert ops group, but one look at Loren has him forgetting his mission in his pursuit of her. Loren is a strong, independent woman and is hoping to advance her journalism career with a big story when she meets Adam. When Adam's boss finds out Loren is Adam's genetic match, he locks them in a room for 24 hours in hopes to breed the next line of genetically advanced soldiers. While neither is ready for that kind of commitment, they also can't resist the painful physical desire they have for each other. After their lockdown is over, Loren is convinced by Adam's boss to remain on the military campus for two weeks in return for information on a kidnapping case she's covering for her paper as well as information on her own personal history.

I had two minor issues with the story – the first was that I really didn't think this had any erotica tendencies to it. For the most part, it seemed like they talked about their burning desire, used a couple words like nipple or erection, and bam – they both orgasmed and we'd moved on to the next scene. It was almost like those fade to black books in that regard… And I know the characters were both practically in heat, but EVERY time they hooked up, it was really fast. Like, I didn't have time to get into it fast. So given the cover, the summary, and the genre the author seems to write to, I thought that the actual sex scenes could have been a little more heated or passionate.

My second issue was that I would have liked to get a little more information on how the DNA alterations happened. We are told that the men were paired with gorgeous and intelligent women to make the first genetically enhanced soldiers, but I assume there were also some changes made to the DNA to make the initial males. But there was never any explanation on how or when the DNA alteration would happen. Also, why do the females in the scenario also react physically to being in close proximity to the males as opposed to just the enhanced males feeling a physical response? I mean, the guy has the genetically altered DNA that makes him hardwired to want to reproduce in a caveman-like way, but the female is just a female who happens to have complimentary DNA. So why would she have such a reaction unless she drank the specially formulated water (example: in the opening scene at the birthday party)?

But those two comments aside, the storyline was really exciting and suspenseful. The bad guy was OH SO BAD – I hated reading the parts that were from his point of view – but then, even that's a good thing because I cared enough to really hate him! I have a feeling Xander may be starring in one of the next few books in the series and as usual I'm already drooling at the thought of this dark, brooding guy being the star of my dreams (I mean, book) for a few nights. The author also leaves some interesting hints about Chase and what may have happened on his mission that I'm hoping she pursues!!! Bring on Coded for Love #2!
